I wake up alone the next morning, despite Jyn cuddling into me when I wrapped my arms around her last night. I hate waking up without her, but when I hear the sounds coming from the baby monitor, I know Cari needed her more than I do right now.

“How are my girls?” I ask, walking into the nursery to see Jyn dressing Cari.

“Hungry,” Jyn tells me with a smile.

“You or Cari?”

“If it was her, I’d have my tits out right now.”

“Oh. Yeah. Do you want me to go get you some food?”

“You could just cook up a couple eggs.”

“I don’t really know how to do that.”

She looks at me like I’ve grown a second head, before shaking her head and smiling. “I guess I just thought you were too tired after work to cook. Or had too much on your mind.”

“Nope. I’m hopeless in a kitchen.”

“Jen cooks.”

“Yeah, and so does Bray, although he learned that here. For them, it was fun to hang out in the kitchen with the cooks.”

“Not for you?”

“I wasn’t royal, but I wasn’t common either. My situation was such that no one knew how to handle me. The staff was awkward around me, and I didn’t want to make their jobs harder by butting in.”

“I could teach you to cook.”

“Thanks, but I’m really not interested.”

“Because you have me around to do it for you.”

Yes, but I know better than to say it out loud. “I’m a pro at ordering in.”

“You really don’t want to learn to make pancakes for Cari on a lazy weekend morning?”

“Well, when you put it that way, I should, huh?”

“You should because life skills are important, but I don’t mind guilting you into it by using our daughter.”

“Guilt is my middle name these days.”

“Bitter much?”

“Just a tad.”

“Nothing I do is intended to make you feel guilty. I hope you know that.”

“I do.”

“Yet, you don’t quite believe it, do you?”

“There are things I can’t help feeling guilty about. Namely, this crazy urge I have for you to stay home. I’m not that guy, Jyn, or at least I’ve never thought I was.”

“I talked to Matt, and asked him if I could cut back a little.”

“You did that for me? Of course you did? See why I feel guilty?”

“I did it for us, Noah. Honestly, while I would never give up my job, and I would go crazy being here all day every day, cutting my days short sounds nice. Or working four days instead of five. He said either one is okay.”

“Whatever you want is fine with me. And, if you hate it and need your full-time back, do that. I really want you to be happy.”

“I know you do, and that’s what makes all this so easy.”

“Is it easy? I mean, you seem like you’re feeling better, but we haven’t really talked about it.”

“I’m not perfectly fine, but I’m happy here with you and Cari. I love being a mom, and if I’m unsure at all, I just look at her. I’ve come to realize it’s okay to be scared or nervous.
